401(k) Plan
Saving for retirement might feel like a distant goal, but starting early can make a big difference, and your 401(k) plan is a powerful way to get there. With a 401(k), you can set aside a portion of each paycheck into a retirement account, helping you build long-term financial security while taking advantage of valuable tax benefits.
You can choose between a Traditional 401(k), which lowers your taxable income now, or a Roth 401(k), which allows your savings to grow tax-free for the future. Either way, your contributions can help you build a strong foundation for retirement.
USLI 401(k) Plan Options Through Fidelity Investments
We’re committed to helping USLI community members plan for a secure financial future. That’s why all community members have access to several 401(k) plan options through Fidelity Investments, making it easy to save for retirement directly from each paycheck.
- Automatic enrollment: All new community members are automatically enrolled in the 401(k) plan 30 days after their hire date, with a 3% pre-tax deferral contribution into a target-date fund. You can adjust this at any time to fit your goals.
- Flexible contributions: Community members can choose between Traditional (pre-tax), Roth (after-tax) or a combination of both.
- Investment options:
- Target-date fund (default): Fidelity selects a fund based on each community member’s expected retirement date.
- Self-directed: Community members choose and manage their own investments.
- Advisor-directed: Community members can work with a financial advisor to build their investment strategy.
- Beneficiary management: Community members can select a beneficiary and review this information annually to keep it current.

Profit-sharing Plan
A profit-sharing plan is a type of retirement benefit by the company, no employee contributions required. It’s a way for a company to invest in employees’ futures by sharing its success with them. Not all companies offer this kind of plan, so it’s a valuable part of the total benefits package at USLI.
Here’s how USLI’s profit-sharing plan works:
- Automatic enrollment: Community members are enrolled in the plan on their start date, no action required other than designating a beneficiary.
- Company contributions:
- USLI community members receive up to 15% of their total salary.
- Gateway Consolidated community members receive up to 10%.
- Total salary includes base pay, bonuses, commissions, overtime and more.
- Vesting schedule: Community members gain 20% ownership of their account each calendar year, becoming fully vested after five full years.
- Eligibility for part-time people and college students: As of January 1, 2022, employees who work more than 500 hours per year may be eligible.
- Account access: While community members don’t manage this account directly, they receive annual statements showing their balance, including contributions and interest.
- Retirement access: Funds become available at age 59½.
- Plan management:
- Managed by Haverford Trust
- USLI community members can update their beneficiary anytime using this form.
This benefit is a meaningful part of your family’s long-term financial wellness. If you have any questions, please have your family member who works at USLI reach out to Samantha Berrang, ext. 2625, on the Accounting team.

It’s designed to help Canadians build the retirement they want, with flexibility and support along the way.

Profit-sharing Plan (EPSP)
USLI offers a profit-sharing plan, which is a type of retirement benefit where the company contributes to USLI Canada community members’ accounts based on their earnings. Unlike an RRSP, community members don’t contribute to this plan themselves, but they do have control over how funds are invested.
Here’s how it works:
- Enrollment: Community members are eligible on their hire date, but they need to actively enroll to participate.
- Company contributions: USLI contributes up to 15% of community members’ total earnings (including base salary, bonuses, commissions and overtime) into their accounts at the beginning of each calendar year, based on the prior year’s earnings.
- Taxable income: These contributions are considered taxable income, so community members are taxed annually as if they received additional income. They can choose to withdraw funds from their accounts to help cover these taxes.
- Investment control: Community members decide how funds are invested, providing flexibility to align with your family’s financial goals.
- Beneficiary management: Community members select a beneficiary and are encouraged to review it annually to keep it up to date.
This plan is a meaningful part of USLI’s benefits package and a great way for your family to build long-term financial security. If you have questions or need help enrolling, reach out to the Benefits team at benefits@usli.com.
